Embracing the Wild: Our Costa Rican Adventure with Bats, Spiders, and Mosquitoes

Bats, bites, and bugs

As we geared up for this exciting escapade, we were embarking on the unknown. Two vacations in Costa Rica had treated us to its beauty, but they had been carefree getaways without the demands of daily life. This time, a three-month stay beckoned us to sink into the rhythm of everyday life here – a place where the allure was more than just the allure of sunsets, sloths, monkeys, and toucans. The real deal of living in the tropics would surely become an integral part of our journey, and this time around, it was more than a mere vacation. It was a short-term relocation, and not just any relocation – we had chosen to embed ourselves in the heart of the jungle. That choice meant embracing everything the jungle had to offer, warts and all. So, to authentically capture our experiences here, I have to talk about both the highs and the lows, which means sharing our encounters with the diverse creatures of the jungle.

Bats Taking Over

Our current stay in Samara has thrown us an interesting curveball: bats are making themselves at home around our entryway. Normally, I’m alright with bats flitting around at sunset, playing their part in keeping insect populations in check. But having them hanging out right above our front door? That’s a whole different story. There’s something distinctly off-putting about stepping out into potential bat poop territory. And there’s more to it than just a “yuck” factor. According to the folks at naturalsciences.org, bats can carry a couple of diseases that humans can catch. One is Histoplasmosis, caused by the Histoplasma capsulatum fungus, and the other is rabies, caused by a virus. I mean, even the Louisiana Department of Health & Hospitals warns that when dried bat guano is disturbed, it releases “bat guano dust” – inhaling the spores from this dust can lead to a respiratory disease called histoplasmosis. The CDC isn’t any less serious about it either. They’ve got it straight on their website that histoplasmosis can range from being a mild bother to being seriously life-threatening. All this knowledge has turned my mornings into a bit of a bat chase and cleanup routine, followed by a proper hosing down and disinfection of our entryway. Our Airbnb management squad came over and did put up a net to keep the bats away, but guess what? It wasn’t big enough to cover the entire area, so the bats just shuffled a couple of feet and the issue remained. If we were shacked up in a hotel, we’d probably have packed our bags and relocated by now. But alas, our Airbnb contract locks us in, and losing a chunk of change that’s non-refundable doesn’t sound like the most brilliant plan. Airbnb is all about safeguarding the landlords, but when it comes to renters like us, well, the struggle is real. So, here we are – it’s our sixth call this morning to the owner, begging for a fix.

Eight-Legged Housemates

Spiders have been a part of our Costa Rican life, and while they might not be my personal favorites, I don’t usually go into panic mode. But my better half has different ideas. So, when a tarantula decided to make itself comfortable on our couch, let’s just say my wife wasn’t exactly thrilled. Picture this: our nightly routine is in full swing – post-dinner cleanup and bedtime preparation for the kids – when a sudden scream pierces the air, followed by an alarmed “What’s that?”. Naturally, it was my job to investigate. Turned out, the formidable spider was no longer among the living, and I swiftly disposed of it. But the sight had left its mark. The potential for more spider run-ins was on everyone’s mind for the rest of the night.

Buzzing Mosquitoes and Scuttling Ants

Given our fair share of camping experiences, you’d think dealing with ants and mosquitoes was old hat for us. Not so fast! Costa Rican ants and mosquitoes have taken things up a notch – they’re like the heavyweight champs in the insect world. Bigger, bolder, and their bites? Oh boy, they pack a punch. We’ve been diligent with the bug spray, spraying ourselves multiple times a day, but these guys don’t seem to care. Mosquitoes here are having a feast at our expense, and swatting them is just an invitation for their buddies to join the party. Anybody planning a trip here, take note: a bug spray loaded with DEET is your best friend. And then there are the leaf cutter ants – a real part of the Costa Rican life tapestry. Our boys are loving this new game of identifying worker ants from soldier ants. But here’s the kicker – their bite feels like a wasp sting. Advice from someone who’s been there: if you stumble upon these little guys, don’t try to squash them. Avoid them like the plague. They’re a fixture of the jungle scene, and while you might win a skirmish, the war? It’s theirs for the taking.

To wrap things up, our journey through Costa Rica is far from the glossy postcard snapshots. Sure, there are breathtaking sunsets and enchanting wildlife, but there’s a whole lot more going on beneath the surface. This time around, we’re immersed in the wild side of things – from bats overhead to spiders on couches, and from relentless mosquitoes to feisty ants. Each day in the jungle brings us face-to-face with its enthralling complexity. It’s not just about the picture-perfect moments; it’s about embracing the raw, untamed reality of life in this captivating environment. As we navigate through these encounters, we’re discovering a deeper appreciation for the interplay between humans and nature.
